In August last year, I drove up to Northumberland from Devon with my wife and three children for a big family get-together. We were celebrating my cousin’s 30th birthday and my uncle’s 70th – a joint 100th. Over 40 of us travelled from as far away as California and Australia for the occasion.
A wonderful story of your visit to that iconic tree. And I love your idea of a permanent memorial to it there, stone would be appropriate I feel, with Hadrian’s Wall there too.
I'm from the US and I think the UK so incredibly beautiful . My husband and I didn't get up to Hadrian's Wall when we visited the Lake Region last year. This makes me so sad that I'll never get to see the tree. Thanks for your delightful writing and the photos of the tree are great. I think your self help book is the only one I haven't read, now I'll have to read it!
My partner comes from that area - born in Hexham and well acquainted with Twice Brewed. He too was distressed by the ignorant vandalism of the destruction of the Sycamore. A sad day.
I live vicariously through you and your family, George. You have a wonderful way of making me feel like I am there experiencing it with you and your family. I love your idea of a “tree sized memorial”…. I hope we hear soon that that very thing is being done.
I hope so too. The National Trust are currently deciding what do to at Sycamore Gap. Hopefully they will turn this horrible situation into something positive.

I've got a good feeling they will build something amazing there. 🤞
A beautiful story. I loved the fact that all your family spent such an amazing time just marvelling at that tree. Quite emotional...
Thanks Jane. The whole area - and particularly the tree - did have a very powerful effect on me when we went to visit.

Thank you, Diane. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you like The Self-Help Bible.
We stayed at the Twice Brewed Inn when we walked Hadrians Walk a few years ago - I love the ancient wall and loved the tree. 😊
It's a fantastic spot. Hopefully they will decide on a worthy replacement for the tree.

Very sad. That must have been a great place to grow up. I loved the area so much.
