Unlike me, Rachel is very tidy and organised in most areas of her life (apart from the car, which she treats like a mobile landfill, and the freezer, which I wrote about here). I am messy and disorganised in almost all areas of my life. I am writing this at a desk piled high with books, scraps of paper and other assorted items that I can’t be bothered to find a home for. The floor beside my bed is littered with clothes like it was when I was 15.
My wife and I share the responsibility of loading our dishwasher. Her primary concern is that everything comes out spotless but not necessarily loaded in an organized manner. Like commenter Mary, our dishwasher also has the 3rd top rack for flatware/cutlery and my wife leaves it to me to load since I want all spoons, forks, and knives organized. It's quicker to unload and put away this way and I'm not an "OCD freak" despite what others may claim.
Where I get into trouble is forgetting to leave a gap in front of the detergent dispenser in the front door and the dishes inside. When this happens, the soap doesn't dispense causing my wife to complain and we have to run the dishwasher again. I am striving to improve.
Love this! Since writing this post, our dishawasher has started playing up. It now only works occasionally. If we get a replacement, I will look for one with one of these third tiers.
That third silverware tray is wonderful. As Darren said, putting away the silverware is fast and efficient if you place all like silverware together to be washed. You have to mix them in a silverware basket. Be sure to turn spoons upside down.
I have had a ridiculous issue with my current dishwasher. Why doesnt current worlds dish makers design a bowl that will actually fit into the dishwasher. Don't they work side by side with places like Corelle to make sure that current worlds dish styles fit? Right now, my current dishwasher would fit a play kitchen dish set perfectly. What about tall kitchen glasses? Does everyone in the current world just drink out of coffee cups? So being a excellent dish stacker would be one whom doesn't lose thier sh## in my house. Lol.
Many people don’t read directions included with dishwashers. The racks can be raised and lowered. If your tall glasses or big bowls don’t fit, raise or lower the racks! Read the manuals!
This is our first dishwasher in decades of handwashing. I stack in a logical tidy way and inspect each item as it's unloaded which means now I have precheck any item others have placed in the dishwasher since we don't use blaster wash pods but earth friendly tablets. No point in retraining other users, just pre and post check suffices. I'm otherwise most untidy.
Read and enjoyed it so much that I reposted it on FB. In our home I'm the architect and even though my husband doesn't do badly I do rework some of the items and separate the silverware better.
My husband was an engineer so he has an analytical brain. He always filled the dishwasher and tried to explain how to do it. I’m no raccoon on meth but not as good at stacking and placement as he was. He no longer deals with the dishwasher since he got cancer 6 years ago (multiple myeloma). I’ve adopted his superior methods and do a great job now. The new point of contention is the shed that contains numerous boxes of Christmas decorations. He thought putting the massively heavy fake tree’s box in a far corner and putting every decoration box in front of it was a great idea. I had to pull out every box to reach the tree. I didn’t need to use the stuff in all those boxes. The shed is now packed by my logical thinking with the tree easily accessible (in a new canvas bag with handles and wheel (WHEELS!!) purchased at Aldi last year. He scoffed at the purchase but it allowed me to leave the base on the tree and to just remove the small top. He finally admitted that was a great $20 buy. He was distraught when he saw the shed though. It’s not as orderly as it had been with his packing method but it works better for me. He can’t help move or lift things so concessions must be made! I learned and adopted his superior dishwasher loading so he’s accepted my shed packing (by avoiding the shed!).
Our new KitchenAid dishwasher has a 3rd top tray where I put all the silverware laid out on their sides with spoons slightly tipped over to avoid water collection. All the utensils are lined up together by type so putting them away is faster and easier without accidentally touching the tops of the utensils. I’ve always hated utensil baskets and having their eating ends poking up seemed unsanitary when my husband grabbed them to put them away. I adore the third tray where all utensils are laid out in separate slots.
Rachel is smart. I never liked loading the dishwasher and my husband did it better so it became his job and I was happy with that. Rachel has no incentive to load the dishwasher correctly because you do it. You’re a good guy ensuring your family eats from clean and sanitary dishes!
I don't let my boyfriend anywhere near the dishwasher or even the sink really. Also, I have a dishwasher rule that works for me: Pointy down, spoony up! Anything pointy should go down in the cutlery rack and the spoons should all go up and they should be staggered throughout. Then everything will get clean and you will not cut your hand reaching for something. Perhaps I do have some Scandinavian blood.
Ha, I like that. I'm fine with our normal knives pointing up as they are quite blunt, but sharp knives definitely should point down. Rachel likes to leave our particularly sharp steak knives pointing up.
I agree totally with you. I know I’m a rubbish dishwasher stacker and am actually fearful of them all jumping around and breaking in there so I just leave them near the dishwasher and my husband puts them in. Works perfectly every time and we’re both happy.
I am like you, George. I’m more of the architect than the raccoon. It’s almost to the point where I am OCD. I prefer that my husband stacks the dishes by the sink and lets me load the dishwasher. It’s easier for both of us. I suppose that makes me the dishwasher fairy. 🍽️ 🧚

Haha, I know this feeling very well. We have several bowls and tall glasses that will not fit in the dishwasher. Very annoying.

I'm so glad our dishwasher has died - I wash my plates etc and he washes his - bliss! Xx
Since writing this post, our dishwasher has stopped working. We are currently washing stuff by hand again. I think I upset the dishwasher gods.
Get a bigger dishwasher.
Will Rachel fit in the dishwasher?
Not if she's stacked it first. No room for anything else.

Oh wow, I love the sound of your quality control checks. Mine come from Leo moaning 'this bowl is still dirty' when he goes to eat his cereal.
Architect here, but we have no dishwasher except my hands 😄, so it's all about proper stacking in the sink 😉
Yes, stacking on a draining rack is a task for true architects. Well done.

Thanks for sharing it, Diana. ❤️

What a lovely story, Mary. Great that you and your husband have found ways and compromises to cope with the situation. ❤️🤗
Wow, a dishwasher with a third level! I'm very jealous.

Love it! You have your very own dishwasher fairy.

Oh wow, you're living the dream, Laura. I'm very envious.
I would love to hear Rachel's side of this story!!!
Ha, she read it before I posted it and didn't seem to disagree with any of it.
I think it’s Rachel’s secret ploy to get you to load the dishwasher every time!!! Very smart woman!!
